Log Entry: Tuesday, May 4th, 1999Vancouver to Smuggler Cove: 37 nm
We took the compass connection apart at the base of the mast: it was a mess! I re-spliced it, as Sateesh didn't have any connectors in stock. It didn't make any difference. We got the mast steps out and went up to inspect the compass. I took the cover off: it's a KVH Autocomp 1000. I put the cover back on, and decided not to take it in to Sateesh. Spent another night at the slip. Got up the next morning and did a complete washdown, left immediately for Smuggler Cove. Even in the time between finishing the washing and leaving, we got several direct hits from above. Apart from the birds, it was a very pleasant stay.
Smuggler Cove was quiet, only one other boat. We tried to put the dinghy on deck using our new dinghy harness, but gave up, as we were too close to the rocks and the wind was picking up. Instead, I rigged a bridle for the dinghy (which worked well). Jane's log reports that we watched an eagle chase a seagull around the cove. We didn't see the end of that chase, but the eagle seemed to have the upper wing, so to speak. Since then, we've watched other similar chases: sometimes seagulls will gang up on what look to be younger eagles, chasing them off ...
