The Maple Leaf in Khutze Inlet

Fixed the throttle control in the cockpit. Also covered "Juneau AK." with duct tape, and flew the Irish flag for the first time …

Almost ran into the wreck …

Beautiful bay, moored VERY close to the mud flats, but the boat was in 50 feet: let out what turned out to be ALL the chain, nearly lost the whole thing, was held on by a rather slight looking line. We hauled the chain back by hand and rewound it around the windlass, very heavy. Decided that each length of marked chain was 20 feet, not 15 …

Crab and Prawn!! We set the traps in the rain, and dinghied back and forth between the two traps.  Hundreds of feet of line on the prawn trap, requiring a fair effort to haul up and check (luckily the prawn trap doesn't need regular checking!).   At first the prawn trap was too close to the commercial lines, so I had to reset it.  I kept moving the crab trap around.  After another hour, I hauled up the prawn trap: five prawns!!  I went and check the crab trap: one ENORMOUS crab.  I was reluctant to handle it, he had a big pincer wrapped around the edge of the trap.  He turned out to be a recently molted crab: the shell was quite soft, easy to eat! The prawns were good too … Ching was uncertain at first, but Jane hand-fed her some crab, and then she really got into it.

Lots of seals hovering around the river mouth, other boats in the bay, the Maple Leaf was there when we arrived, but left around 5 …

Jane's log:

"Motored up Graham Reach to Khutze Inlet.  Anchored close to the river mouth and falls at the head; all 240' of chain out!  We'll see how the mud flats look at low tide; anchored OK but it would be easier to do in low tide.   Lots of seals and otters: a sign of fish!! ...  Set the crab and prawn traps.

"Bird life is also amazing: eagles, common merganser, and (I think) male and female Barrows Goldeneye ...

"Prawn and crab for dinner, our first catch - they went for the cat food bait!"
