Ketchikan to Gardner Bay: 36.1 nm
6:30: Rain.
I got up, and got ready to go back to Soapy's. I walked past the empty cruise
ship docks, but saw one out in the channel, preparing to enter. By 8, I was dialing
AT&T, and got the site updated without too much trouble.
Walking back to Ilari, there were two ENORMOUS cruise ships at the dock, disgorging
their cargo of transients, who bundled into buses, high-speed catamarans, taxis, or just
took off on foot, to see the area in the time allotted to them. Everything in
Ketchikan revolves around this pattern: as long as cruise ships are docked, stores and
restaurants stay open; the cruise ships leave, and everything shuts down.

Leaving Ketchikan |
Clarence Strait |
 |
| We left at around 10:30, bound for Gardner Bay, way down near
Point Chacon. The wind of course, was on the nose all the way. As we went
further south, and the day progressed, the seas slowly worsened. By the time we
reached Gardner Bay, we were looking at 25-30 knot winds, and a 6 foot chop. We
turned to go down the narrow channel, and found ourselves in a quiet bay surrounded by
mountains. There were williwaws during the night ...
From Jane's log:
" ... anchored at the head of Gardner - we should rename the bay Ilari, as there
are tons of jellyfish around the boat. Heavy rain: decided against fishing!"
