Port Real to Veta Bay!)
 Caves on Baker
Island ...
|
We woke up to a clear, sunny sky. The
original itinerary was to take us up the outside of Baker Island to Veta Bay. As we
started out, it was clear that the ocean was still unsettled: 8-10 foot swell, with chop,
and with the odd larger wave, sometimes from a different direction. We changed our course
to go up the inside, and pop back out the top of the island and back down to Veta. As we
came back outside, it was clear that, if anything, the seas had worsened. We
determined to continue, as we felt we could find shelter in the south end of Veta Bay.
It took us over an hour to reach Veta Bay, and could see caves in the sides of the
cliffs, but there was no shelter anywhere in the bay, so we turned around, and spent
another hour and a half getting back out of the messy seas. |
 Guide Rock ... I
misunderstood Jane when she called this 'Guide Rock': I thought she meant it was 'a guide
rock', and so any rock with any mark on it thereafter I referred to as a guide rock, until
a few days later Jane asked me why ... |

Our broken autopilot ... |
 |
[lost control of our gear as we anchored. Turned out that the cable
connections at the engine had come loose. We spent a lot of time figuring out the
correct way to reconnect the cables, and used bolts and nuts which would not easily
loosen. We also added a check of the cable connections to our daily checklist.]
