Bright sunny. Up at 5:15. Didn’t sleep more than an hour, because of the swell in the anchorage, we took them on the beam.  Maybe we should have set a second anchor …

We started our trip up the outside of Baranof Island. The seas were very lumpy, 6 feet, with a NW wind, all of which was on our nose from 6:30 to 2:00. The boat pounded through it all, took it very well.

Baranof Island is spectacular: a spine of snow-covered peaks down the middle, bristling like a durian, and many of the peaks are ringed by puffy white clouds. There are no boats here, we are completely on our own …

   ... and in sunshine

The first land we came to was Cape Ommaney (pronounced AWmeny, or Omni with a little 'uh' sound between the Om and the ni): a steep cliff facing the sea, but the side is shaped like two giant elephant feet …

Tenfathom Anchorage.jpg (10222 bytes)The anchorage here at Tenfathom is peaceful, no swell …

Excerpt from Jane's log:

" ...  The anchorage we picked is another wonderful spot, with Onetree Island at the entrance.  They must have run out of names by the time they got here: other landmarks in the area include Fivefathom Patch and Midway Island ...

Baranof is really and incredible Island: the peaks and rugged coastline make stunning viewing, even when the seas get nasty ..."

Ching appears to have adapted to the sea-going life: today she moved around very slowly, but didn’t throw up …

Lunch: cheese, tomato, lemon-dill humus with Jane’s homemade bread …

Dinner: baked pasta shells with home-made sauce …
