Bartlett Cove is the entrance to The Glacier Bay
National Park and Preserve
Fog. Heavy, blinding, ring-your-bell-and-sound-your-horn, use-your-radar fog.
We made our way
slowly across the Icy Strait to the entrance to Glacier Bay. At the ranger station at
Bartlett Cove, we watched an orientation video about the park, bears, boating safety, etc.
We decided at this point, as it was raining pretty steadily and still foggy, that we
would change our plans, relax, and spend the night in Bartlett Cove. We went through the
Natural History Museum (well done), had lunch at the lodge (good food!) and returned to
the boat, after phoning Nathalie to talk about our Queen Charlotte plans.
Jane's log:
"Motored over to Bartlett Cove to register in Glacier Bay. We decided to
anchor for the night, due to poor visibility. An amazing sight as we came out of
Inian Cove: two humpback whales diving off the beam and stern. Due to the poor
visibility I could hear before seeing them. One must have dived 100' from the boat!
"With the green/blue glacier waters, the mist, and the ever-so-gentle swell, the
boat felt like it was sinking! What a weird sensation ...
A sea lion played in our wake as we came into Bartlett Cove."
[Later, I returned to the dock to fill up our 9.9 gas tank.]
