Log Entry: Saturday, June 19th, 1999 Russell Island to Reid Inlet (via Tarr and Johns Hopkins inlets): 30.2 nm
Today we didn't go very far, as the flow cries ... But between the two anchorages, we've seen a different world: calving glaciers, seals and pups on ice floes, rock mountains devoid of all life, and the sea in so many different hues of green, blue, gray, yellow, as to defy one to find a new adjective ... The glaciers we approached were Margerie, Grand Pacific, Lampugh, and Johns Hopkins. We navigated through fields of ice berglets, which I started to call Burger Bits: hundreds of little icebergs laying across our path The last two days have made me realize how tiny we humans are in the face of nature.
Distances are even more deceiving than usual here, as the terrain is so alien. One mega cruise ship, then later the Wilderness Adventurer came through (a catamaran hull), doing about 25 knots. Coming back down-bay, we passed two smaller ships, and the Carricklee, and the Camelot up-bound. We spent a lot of time zigzagging through the burger bits. Carricklee came through, spent a lot of time down at the glacier, then came back to anchor near us. They changed their minds, and left the inlet, heading south.
