Swanson Harbor to Haines: 69.5 nm!
Alaskans are very proud of their flies and
mosquitoes. And so they should be! We, and Ching, discovered the flies
together in Haines. In the space of a few minutes after we anchored, there were a
dozen enormous flies in our pilothouse, trying to get
out. I have to say though that Alaskan flies, while they may be big, are very
stupid, almost as stupid as Mr. Burke. (For those who haven't seen ..., Brad Pitt
says, at a significant juncture in the movie: "You're a very stupid man, Mr.
Burke."). Ching made things very unpleasant for the flies, and the remainder
were mopped up by yours truly.
Jane's log:
"We were hoping for a sail up Lynn Canal, with south winds 20 knots forecast, but
they never materialized so we motored again. But the sun came out (we even put up
our cockpit awning!) and some porpoises, dolphins, and sea lions kept us company.
"We decided to make a long day of it and head all the way to Haines, but
unfortunately, when we got there, there was no room at the inn, so we anchored in the
shadow of 'Vision of the Sea', a large cruise ship.
"The scenery in the Canal was stunning, with the mountains and glaciers looming
above."
