Skagway
Jane's log:
"We took the steam train up to Bennett Lake - wow, great trip, well worth it.
Still bright at 11:00; we watched Ching chase two local black cats up the dock: her
territory is huge!! Ian thought the second cat was actually a rat!
 |
The Bridal Veil Falls, in Alaska near Skagway. Our train journey
took us through Alaska, British Columbia, and (we thought) the Yukon, but looking at maps,
we were about three miles from the Yukon when we reached Lake Bennett. |

 |
The Lake Linderman car. This is one of the oldest in the fleet.
The current fleet was assembled from all over North America. As the railway
is narrow gauge, supplies of cars were understandably limited. |
 |
We went on the steam excursion to Lake Bennett, which happens only six
times a year. We didn't plan on it, it just happened that way. It was worth
it!! |
 |
Engine # 73 pulling the train across Bridge 14A. Engine #73 is the
same age as me (built in 1947). |
 |
The church at Bennett Lake is the only original structure left standing.
On May 27th, 1898, 10,000 people were waiting in Bennett BC as the ice finally
broke, and 7,000 boats had left Bennett by May 28th, the day the lake became navigable. |
 |
A modern outhouse for the campground at Bennett. Many hikers hike
the trail used by the Stampeders. |
 |
This sign is posted on the outhouse. |

A piece of railway equipment at Fraser BC. This is the border
crossing: we had to show passports to get into Canada. |
 |
The original Trail of '98. It was narrow, and if you stepped off,
you might have to wait up to three hours before you'd find a way to get back on ... At
the summit, RCMP were waiting with Gattling guns, to ensure that you had 2,000 pounds of
supplies: they insisted that each person have that much, as Dawson Creek, where everyone
was headed, had no supplies, and 2,000 pounds was estimated to be enough to last you a
year. |
I lost my favourite hat coming off the train, which made me despondent for a while.
We went for dinner at the restaurant beside the boat harbour: another great
restaurant!! That cheered me up.
