Log Entry: Sunday, July 11th, 1999 Portage Bay to Petersburg: 24.3 nm
Calm seas until an hour out of Petersburg, then it quickly built up into mild chop. A large cruise ship, large fishing boat and a tug with barge came out of the channel just before we went in, complicating matters. We timed our arrival to minimize the current in Petersburg, which is advised by the guides for docking. Docking still required two attempts. Voyageur was beside us, with Mike and Lily O'Reilly, from Canoe Cove in Sidney, aboard. Mike was fishing for herring off his swim deck as we arrived, and he helped us with our lines as we docked. They were northbound (everyone in this universe is either northbound or southbound). Later Mike helped us with the Nav Suite autopilot interface. Mike gave us a herring for Ching. She seemed a little afraid of it when it twitched when she touched it. I cleaned it, chopped it up and put it in her bowl: it kept her occupied for a while ... Shortly after we arrived, Samaria docked on our other side. We all put our water hoses together to get water from the only tap, which was 100 yards away. The Jay B. was docked across from us. Had dinner with Pat and Lauren from Samaria.
