We listened to the anchor chain clanking against rocks all night ...
In the morning, we lounged about, and watched both other boats leave. We
considered taking the mooring, but didn't want to have a rafting hassle if someone else
wanted to share. Several charter boats came and went, and several small planes
landed in the cove: passengers came out on the pontoons and took pictures, and then they
left again.
Then the rain started.
We rowed (Jane rowed) ashore, and we took the path which led up to the Forestry cabin.
It was a longer hike than expected, but eventually we came to a beautiful lake, and
found the cabin. There was a rowboat, we went out and rowed around a bit.
While we were out on the lake, a loon did a strange dance in the water, maybe a mating
ritual? Or we were too close to the nest?. More sheer cliffs into the lake,
wonderful waterfalls on the path up to the lake. This is bear country: we saw fresh
tracks
When we returned there was a new powerboat on the mooring. Later the same
sailboat that had been with us the previous night returned, they anchored in close to
shore.
Jane's log:
"Relaxed in the am. Made some banana bread; I didnt like the toffee I made
yesterday. Ian worked on the web site and I updated my CV (yuck!!! work
)
"In the afternoon we took off on a great hike to Punchbowl Lake where the USFS
maintains a shelter and a great skiff for exploring the lake, where we spotted a large
common loon. He danced on the water and called for ages. He even tried to follow is: maybe
there was a nest in the area
We spied bear and deer tracks as well as pretty fresh
bear poop along the trail.
