Forty-odd miles. Nautical miles. Just for the record, a nautical
mile is 6080 feet (1852 meters), more or less equal to one minute of latitude.
More or less, because the earth is not a perfect sphere, and a minute of latitude
varies from 1861.7 meters at the equator to 1852.3 meters at latitude 45º. second of
longitude, more or less, at the equator. A sea mile is equal to one
minute of latitude at the latitude in question. A regular, or statute mile,
for those who remember, is 5280 feet (1609 meters).
Jane's log:
"We left Clarke before the tide got too low - in the rain again. The raven
came out to say goodbye, and some Dall porpoises passed us just outside.
"We decided not to go up Surf Inlet, as with the bad visibility we wouldn't see
much; instead, we're going straight to Laredo Inlet for two nights.
"We came into Laredo Inlet in the rain, and anchored in the Bay of Plenty.
Let's hope it clears tomorrow. We relaxed over Oolong tea.
