"Spotted
loons and herons coming through Chatham Channel. We were a little after slack, but
the current was still with us.
"No wind today: a pity after yesterday's great sail. Staying close to shore
up Johnstone Strait we didn't have to fight too much current. We had a SOG of 5-7
knots up the Strait and through Sunderland Channel where we stopped in Douglas Bay for the
night. We'll go through Whirlpool Rapids and Green Point Rapids tomorrow.
"The further south we go the busier it gets. In Douglas Bay, we had 6 boats
at 17:00, 9 boats at 19:15. A large motorboat, after a rendezvous with a Gruman
Goose, turned up the music really loud. I didn't feel bad rowing over to ask them to
lower it; their response was to weigh anchor and move further out of the bay. I got
a round of applause from the other boats!
"Ching had great fun ashore, cornering a squirrel up a tree
before we dragged her back to the boat.
"A racket onshore was finally identified as a black mother bear and two cubs.
Interesting to watch with so many people: obviously these bears didn't mind the noise of
the music, dinghy engines, and loud conversations going on between the boats!!"
